International Agriculture programs are designed to prepare students to take on the challenge of problems such as food shortages and environmental destruction in a global economy. Students typically focus on agricultural development, international cooperation, and the agriculture of developing countries. Natural sciences, as well as economic and social sciences, are covered thoroughly. Students develop an understanding of how both governmental and non-governmental organizations operate. They gain knowledge of the political and economic relationships between food and people in various areas of the world.
Many degrees or certificates in International Agriculture offer curriculum in which students focus on one region of the world. Many graduates qualify for overseas jobs in their geographic area of specialization, making them attractive candidates in the global job market. Others work for governments, the World Bank, the State Department, the Foreign Service, the Peace Corps, or the United Nations. All graduates are in a unique position to effect change in international food systems in a lasting way.
