Area, Cultural, and Ethnic Studies programs include a wide range of programs that are focused on learning about specific geographic regions, as well as various cultural and ethnic populations. As a result of the broad nature of the subject matter, programs tend to be highly interdisciplinary. Area studies concentrations give students the opportunity to learn about the history, language, literature, culture, economy, and government of a specific region. Examples would include Middle Eastern Studies, Russian studies, Latin American studies, and Caribbean studies. Cultural studies programs cross the boundaries of disciplines to study the connections between various aspects of culture, including popular culture, the arts, and everyday life.

Ethnic studies concentrations seek to help students develop an understanding of how to facilitate communication across cultural boundaries. They study the range of experiences of different ethnic groups within a given society. They learn how an ethnic group’s past experiences influence current race relations. Constructive debate, critical thinking, problem-solving, and general communication skills are highly emphasized.
