Electrician programs teach students how to install and maintain all types of electrical systems. Most programs are hands-on experiences that impart the basic knowledge of electricity to students. Subjects include classification of electricity, fitting conduits, electrical installation, heating, lighting, and properties of conductors. Students generally go on to participate in some sort of internship or apprenticeship with an experienced electrician. Graduates have the option of either gaining employment or starting their own businesses.

Students learn how to install circuits and conductors and how to install and maintain wiring systems. They become familiar with the National Electrical Code and learn to apply the code to their day-to-day work. Programs focus on blueprint reading, mathematics, power systems, safety, circuit analysis, and cabling. Many programs are business-oriented and also cover subjects like small business ownership for those students wishing to start their own.
