Bilingual Education programs prepares teachers to work in settings that are multicultural and bilingual. There is a growing need for this service across the country as the numbers of language minority students in general, and Spanish-speaking students in particular, continue to increase. This specialized teaching endorsement is often designed for teachers who have majored in K-12 education in all disciplines. Students in the program learn how to put the cognitive, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of their students in perspective. They learn how to develop curricula and instructional materials that are effective in meeting the needs of bilingual students.
Courses, labs, and practical experiences are focused on approaching complex pedagogical problems in interactive and collaborative ways. Issues of language and learning are approached in a way that respects linguistic and cultural differences. The socialization of students within the academic setting is examined in a socio-cultural context.
