Detailed profiles of schools for General Education from the EdRef college search portal.
General Education programs are designed for students wishing to become licensed teachers by completing a curriculum, usually five years in length, that results in a master's degree. The programs typically encompass a broad liberal arts foundation, as well as considerable content area focus and professional study in education. Students typically choose their liberal arts discipline and then combine that study with training in subject matters, educational training, school-based hands-on programs.
Students in these programs typically gain a variety of practical teaching experiences, often during the first year or two of the program. That professional teaching experience allows students to gain a great deal of exposure to the classroom setting during their studies and augments the more theory-based disciplines. Students study elementary, middle school, and secondary education in an in-depth manner. They also learn about behavior disorders, as well as science, math, and English subjects. Some programs focus on the needs of special education students.
