Detailed profiles of schools for Civil Engineering Technology from the EdRef college search portal.
Civil Engineering Technology programs prepare students to become civil engineering technicians and technologists. These positions involve working with the design, planning, and construction of tunnels, roads, bridges, and other basic societal infrastructure. They work to carry out the tasks given to them by the civil engineer, serving as the connecting link between engineers and tradesmen. Students learn how to use electronic surveying and global positioning equipment, as well as computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) programs. They learn how to survey and plan roads, and they graduate knowing how to aid in the design of water treatment plants.
Graduates may work as estimators, surveyors, inspectors, or materials testers. These programs teach them how to become proficient with instruments like density testing devices, levels, and transits. Coursework also includes the study of concrete, soils, surveying, contracts, technical drawing, and hydraulics. They work with the latest in computer technology, learning to design and plan indoor and outdoor environments. Much of the coursework emphasizes learning how to solve problems, both day-to-day and project-centered.
