Detailed profiles of schools for Civil Engineering from the EdRef college search portal.
Civil Engineering programs prepare students to become instrumental in the design and construction of various elements of the physical environment that surrounds our society. Students learn to design transportation systems, water treatment systems, buildings, and other types of structures. They are taught to understand the function of structures within an environment and the mathematics that make the design of those structures possible. Engineers must be able to estimate the impact of their work on the environment by understanding such functions as energy efficiency and finance.
The different specializations in civil engineering include structural engineering, mechanics and materials; geo-systems; transportation sytems; environmental and water resources; and construction engineering. Many programs encourage students to take a number of general elective courses beyond the field of engineering in order to broaden their knowledge. Graduates are prepared to design the infrastructure of society, including roads, dams, bridges, and buildings.
