Engineering Design programs give students a solid foundation of knowledge relating to the fundamental issues of product design. Students learn how to use all of the analytical and computing tools at their disposal, as well as the scope of each one of these tools. Much of the focus is on applying advanced computer aides design technology within the fields of engineering design, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and other areas. Students learn about the whole process of product development from manufacturing to sales. Students learn how to account for the technical constraints and market considerations in the design process.

Programs are very interdisciplinary, drawing from areas as diverse as information technology, manufacturing, computer-aided design, prototyping, and design. Students typically work in small, closely-knit teams where they attempt to solve real-world problems. Through this process, they learn about teamwork, collaboration, and group problem-solving. Students learn how to creatively solve problems by creating alternatives to design specifications.
