American Literature Schools

Detailed profiles of schools for American Literature from the EdRef college search portal.

American Literature programs teach students how to read American texts in a critical manner and to put them in a social and historical context. Many programs attempt to place American literature into an international framework, and students traditionally take courses in areas outside traditional literature, such as film popular culture, feminist inquiry, and contemporary literature. Because students learn how to read, write, and think critically about literature, they are prepared to go on to more advanced academic study or the professional community.

Many skills are developed in the study of literature. Students practice reading texts closely, making observations, and understanding the structure and other features of passages. They become familiar with the major works, authors, and genres in the world of literature study. They learn about period styles and develop the ability to identify changes in literary themes and practices. They develop the ability to participate in the conversations that define the discipline of literature.
