Creative Writing Schools

Creative Writing programs provide an environment for writers to nurture their creativity among faculty and peers. Students focus on the aesthetic aspects of writing and participate in a wide variety of readings and events. Fiction, nonfiction, or poetry are the usual areas of specialization. These disciplines are developed through individual mentoring, group discussions, and workshops. Graduates of these programs may become authors, publishers, editors, or teachers. Most programs have small classes in writing and literature. Peer and faculty criticism are among the most important components of the student's development.

Courses in publishing and teaching creative writing are often included in order to help prepare students for successful careers in the industry. Students examine literary criticism, theory, and the history of literature. Readings are often a part of programs, sometimes held weekly and involving student work as well as published authors as guests. Students gain a wide exposure to the worlds of academic and published writing.
