They learn to process biological specimens and perform tests on body fluids, cells, and tissues. They learn how to identify common diseases through the examination of laboratory findings and apply basic scientific principles. They interact with a variety of different health professionals, including other laboratory personnel. Interpersonal communication and professional behavior are emphasized throughout these programs.

Because laboratory tests have become common procedure in the detection of diseases, technicians typically perform their duties under the supervision of medical laboratory scientists, pathologists, or other professionals specializing in biology. Students graduate with extensive knowledge of specific techniques, instruments, and procedures. They specialize in chemistry, hematology, immunology, or microbiology.
