Nurses play an essential role in the U.S. health care system. With kind hearts dedicated to patient care, the nation's 2.6 million registered nurses (RNs) make up the largest percentage of health care workers in the country. RNs are valuable in a variety of settings, from hospitals and clinics to education positions to doctor's offices and surgery practices, and these able workers sometimes pursue advanced degrees or certifications to practice in specialized areas of medicine as clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and certified RN anesthetists. Regardless of the setting in which they work, all nurses need to be caring, compassionate, sympathetic, and detail oriented.

The first step to launching a career as an RN is obtaining a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or an associate's degree in nursing (ADN). If you're already an RN but would like to advance your career, pursuing a master's degree in a specialty area through an online nursing degree program is a great way to combine your existing skills with new skills to create even more opportunities for development. Typically, students can complete an ADN degree in two years, a BSN degree in about four years, and a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree in two additional years.

Thankfully, today's nurses are able to obtain training from regionally accredited online nursing schools. Many online programs allow nursing students to apply their previous training and experience to the new program and to earn the additional credits and skills they need to advance to the next level of practice. These online programs include MSN programs and RN to BSN programs.

Online nursing schools generally require supervised clinical practice that can be completed at a local health care facility. Some online nursing programs are designed specifically for practicing nurses who want to upgrade their education by taking courses in nursing theory online.

In addition to obtaining a degree, nurses also need to be licensed. All RNs must pass the National Council Licensure Exam-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) and any additional requirements set by their state.
