Detailed profiles of schools for Demography from the EdRef college search portal.
Demography programs provide students with the opportunity to study the size, structure, and distribution of human populations. Graduates usually pursue careers in government, NGOs, academia, and private business. Programs are typically interdisciplinary while maintaining focus on the core quantitative areas of knowledge and skill essential to the curriculum. Some students choose to focus more on quantitative analysis or a combination of both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
There are a number of different areas of study within programs of demography. Students study theories of demographic behavior, including theories of fertility, family dynamics, mortality, and migration. They study statistical demography and population data measures. They use modeling extensively in order to simulate and forecast changes in society, such as the interactions between cultures and populations. They seek to understand the consequences of demographic change, including those that are economic, political, social, and cultural. They also study a great deal of mathematics related to demographical analysis.
