Geography programs focus on the relationship between the environment and society. Geography is a popular liberal arts major, and students can choose between the bachelor of arts in geography and the bachelors of science in geography. The B.A. option gives students the opportunity to study geographical methods and use them to analyze the relationships between human societies and their surroundings. They examine a variety of geographical issues in the area of human geography. They develop a range of skills, including numeracy, fieldwork, information technology, and interpersonal communication. Students graduate prepared to start field work or continue study at the graduate level.
The bachelor of science option emphasizes the relationship between core components of the earth surface system. The focus here is more on the physical elements of environment, landscape, human society, and the interactions between them. The skills learned tend more toward the quantitative realm, including physical and environmental geography, data acquisition, and analysis and interpretation of data. Laboratory methods, numeracy, fieldwork, critical analysis, writing, and communication are emphasized throughout the programs.
