Consumer Resources programs focus on helping family members and consumers develop lives that have higher degrees of quality. Students learn how to serve families and consumers in a society and culture that are constantly in flux. Study in consumer sciences provides students with a broad survey of the retail sector, including merchandise, services, food, and other goods. Different types of retailing are examined, including traditional and non-traditional retail models. Specializations include food retailing, international retailing, and visual merchandising.
Students have the option of earning a bachelor’s degree in consumer science, which allows them to get jobs or pursue graduate studies in the fields of economics, business, consumer law, consumer finance, or family economics. Some students prepare specifically for positions within state or local government with give them the direct ability to aid and influence consumers. Or they may choose to prepare for careers in the business sector with studies in marketing, retailing, consumer financial planning, and consumer affairs.
