Liberal Arts programs are designed to develop students’ knowledge of basic inquiry, critical thinking, analysis, writing, and speech. Students attempt to gain a broad knowledge of many different subjects, while usually focusing on one or more subjects toward the end of the program. They often have a great deal of flexibility in choosing what to study, and they may participate in internships, study abroad, and field experiences. The idea is to give students a unique perspective on humanity and culture throughout history and in the modern world. Some programs integrate liberal arts education with professional studies in order to better prepare graduates to enter the work force successfully.
Most liberal arts programs allow for students to master one subject in a more in-depth manner. There are many different options, including anthropology, art, Asian studies, classical studies, communications, computer science, economics, education, English, environmental studies, European studies, film studies, geoscience, history, mathematics, languages, music, philosophy, physics, astronomy, political science, psychology, religious studies, sociology, women’s studies.
