Detailed profiles of schools for Historic Preservation from the EdRef college search portal.
Historic Preservation programs give students the chance to study the historic environment and changes within that environment. The field has never enjoyed such importance as it does today, with cities, buildings, and entire regions utilizing the knowledge of the discipline in their design, planning, and management. This is due to the fact that our society has increasingly become more aware of the need to preserve the relics of history, and, conversely, the damage done when historical resources are lost. Students examine history as a part of the continuing change that results in the various material, psychological, and symbolic qualities of our culture and environment.
Students must first develop a background knowledge in history, theory, documentation, technology, and planning. After this foundation is created, they move on to examine one particular area of historic preservation, such as building conservation, site management, landscape preservation, preservation planning, or preservation design. Students often have the opportunity to participate in internships and sponsored research. Graduates are well prepared to work on the preservation of the cultural heritage of the world.
