Renaissance-and-medieval programs provide students with a conceptual framework of the forces that influenced the medieval and Renaissance periods of history. They study the periods in terms of historical, cultural, and social factors. They study fine arts, such as art and music; history; language and literature, such as English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, and Spanish; philosophy; and religion. The programs are this highly interdisciplinary and cover cultures that existed from Late Antiquity to the seventeenth century.
Programs include lectures, symposia, roundtables, presentations, and discussions. A typical course of study might include classes in art history, classics, comparative literature, English, French, Italian, German studies, history, Jewish studies, Middle Eastern studies, music, philosophy, religion, Spanish, and Portuguese. Many programs require students to develop a reading knowledge of Latin and gain experience in paleography and research methodology.
