System Theory programs allow students to study systems and control theory, as well as particular specializations within those theories. Students may focus on finite alphabet systems; feedback control systems; nonlinear model predictive control; electromechanical systems; limitations of feedback systems; time delay systems; process control applications; and hybrid systems. They study state-space analysis and discrete time linear systems. They must develop a fundamental knowledge of linear vector spaces, linear operators, and normed linear spaces. They also study matrix algebra, state space formulation, controllability, observability, duality, and stability analysis.

Systems and control theory plays important roles in many different areas of technology. Its importance has grown throughout the last decade and is expected to continue. The rise of this discipline is due to demands on the performance of technical equipment and installations. Production requires high product quality and manufacturing conditions that are manageable. Also, digital instruments and control devices have begun to be more widely available at lower costs.
