Detailed profiles of schools for Librarianship from the EdRef college search portal.
Librarianship programs prepare students to become library and information professionals and make contributions to the profession through research and public service. Programs strive to create an atmosphere of creative inquiry in which students can learn the basic librarianship principles such as identification, selection, organization, evaluation, retrieval, dissemination, evaluation, and preservation of information. They learn to work with information in a wide variety of formats. They are informed of the latest advances in library technology. They examine issues such as intellectual freedom ethics, and cultural diversity.
Students may elect to earn a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree which provides the foundation for a number of careers in libraries in both the management and service sectors. They may work in information agencies, the information industry, as well as business, industry, government, research, and other information-dependent environments. Students study the current and possible future properties of library systems, and develop the knowledge and skills they need to enter various professions within the discipline.
