Detailed profiles of schools for Biochemistry from the EdRef college search portal.
Biochemistry programs allow students the opportunity to study the molecular makeup of the living world. Programs typically begin with broad surveys of subjects such as cell and molecular biology, physiology, and microbiology. Students then progress to study more advanced areas like cell communication, enzyme actions, metabolism, and gene regulation. They have the option of specializing in one or more of these specific areas of study within microbiology. Throughout the programs, students gain an understanding of the cell as a functioning chemical system. They examine the internal chemistry of cells as well as the communication between those cells.
Specialization within biochemistry can be divided into four distinct sections: molecular biology, nutritional biochemistry, physical biochemistry, and macromolecular metabolism. Students who graduate from these programs are ideally prepared for careers in the field of medicine and healthcare. Or they may choose to pursue advanced studies and graduate degrees in fields related to biochemistry. Some take positions working for biotechnology firms.
