Literature and Language programs are designed to instill in students an appreciation of literature through gaining an equivalent appreciation of the language of the literature. Students learn about the linguistic techniques that are used to great effect in texts. They study and discuss the relationships between linguistic choices and the effects of those choices. Students typically are exposed to literature from many different historical periods and genres. They also learn about current theories regarding literature.

Students in these programs may study the languages of a particular region, such as Asia. They would learn the main languages and literatures of East, Southeast, Central, and South Asia, with emphasis on the roles these languages play in each particular culture. Linguistic, textual, and literary analysis is covered, as is comparative literature theories and techniques. There are many new areas of inquiry within this field, including the connections between geographic areas and their specific linguistics.
