Classical, Ancient, and Near East Language and Literature programs follow a long tradition in forming the backbone of a liberal arts education. Classical studies include are focused on learning and human understanding that dates back to the ancient world and has been brought up to date through modern methodologies and intellectual concepts. While the focus is on language courses, students also study topics like history, philosophy, art, theater, and archaeology. The study of the Near East includes courses in Egyptology, Arabic linguistics, Islamic studies, Jewish literature, and Persian studies.
The study of the ancient world includes study in science, philosophy, art, cultural history, political history, economic history, antiquity, and languages. Students may focus on Europe up to the fall of the Roman empire. They may choose to study the Aztecs up to the point of European contact. Regardless of which culture they focus on, students examine a culture’s period of history that does not connect to that culture’s present-day experience. They study the cultural changes that have occurred between the ancient and present time periods. They learn about such topics as epistemology, economics, and technology.
