Detailed profiles of schools for South Asian Language from the EdRef college search portal.
South Asian Language programs focus on the intellectual foundations of languages and civilizations from South Asia. A primary focus of most programs is for students to learn to speak and use languages from the region for the purposes of study and research. Students also become intimately familiar with a wide range of texts from South Asia, and they reflect on the conditions from which those texts arose. Students study the cultural and social histories and modern situations within the countries of South Asia. In addition to courses in South Asian texts and languages, students also choose a specialty within the general field.
Programs offer a multidisciplinary approach to the cultures and languages of countries in South Asia, including Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Tibet, and others. The multidisciplinary nature of the programs shows in their range of courses such as history, archaeology, philosophy, art, religion, folklore, music, politics, sociology, anthropology, and economics. Students gain knowledge and skills in three different areas: cultural history, linguistic skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
