Commercial Art and Design programs prepare students to enter the field of illustration, package design, layout, exhibit design, and computer imaging in an entry-level capacity. Students can earn an Associate of Science which prepares them for employment or entry into bachelor of fine arts programs in such areas as graphic design, photography, and computer art. Most programs emphasize advertising design in the form of promotional art, logos, brochures, book covers, and more. They learn to use traditional art materials as well as computers and software such as Painter, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Pagemaker.

There are a number of specialties students can choose from in this field. Commercial product design gives students the chance to design advertisements for products using paints, water color, and computers. Illustration prepares students to use charcoal, paint, and pastels to create detailed product illustrations. 3-D package design gives students the skills they need to design promotional art that conforms to the specifications of their target audience. Poster design gives students the chance to create promotional posters to advertise a variety of products.
