Crafts programs prepare students to succeed in competitive professional environments by giving them the skills and resourcefulness necessary for careers in the field of crafts. Most curricula is focused on projects that give students experience in the studio. Students learn to work with ceramics, metals, fibers, wood, glass, and plaster. Students develop skills in these areas and they are challenged to develop conceptual and expressive fundamentals. In this way, they are exposed to a wide range of professional possibilities and perspectives.
During the course of study in crafts, students take classes in philosophy, technique, and other modern issues that relate to the making of crafts. Functional design is complemented with a fine arts background. Students learn to understand the concepts involved in the materials and the creative processes of crafts professions. As students progress through these programs, they are exposed to more technical and complex design concepts. Most graduates go on to become independent artists, design professionals, or they enter graduate programs.
