Detailed profiles of schools for Cosmetology from the EdRef college search portal.
Cosmetology programs give students the skills and knowledge they need to perform a wide range of beauty-related services, including shampooing, manicuring, make-up application, hair styling, hair waving, hair straightening, skin and scalp treatments, bleaching, and tinting. Students gain an understanding of hair chemistry and biology, as well as a solid foundation in interpersonal communication skills, professional development, and group dynamics. Students will graduate with excellent critical thinking, writing, and verbal communication skills that relate specifically to the field of cosmetology.
Students may also choose to specialize in a particular subject such as hair or nails. For example, those specializing in nails study manicuring, pedicuring, sculpted nail application, nail care, chemistry, biological concepts, anatomy and physiology of nails, and safety standards of the industry. Those specializing in hair study haircutting, hair texturizing, hair coloring, hairstyling, manicuring, and health and safety standards. Students apply these skills to live models, and many programs feature guest artists and frequent product knowledge training.
