Detailed profiles of schools for Specialized Physical Science from the EdRef college search portal.
Specialized Physical Science programs are usually graduate degree programs in physics or astronomy that emphasize strong theoretical and experimental research programs. Students may study subjects like astrophysics, high energy physics, physics education, material physics, optical physics, atomic physics, molecular physics, or materials physics. Some programs may emphasize the application of physics in modern industrial or other non-academic environments. Doctor of philosophy degrees are designed for students who have a well-developed understanding of physics and can investigate and research contemporary problems on their own.
One example of a specialized physical science program is that of the degree in health physics. This discipline seeks to protect people in society from the harmful effects associated with radiation. It grew out of the radiation hazards encountered during the development of the atomic bomb, which were solved by the cooperation between physicists and other scientists, including chemists, biologists, physicians, and engineers. Today, students studying health physics learn to use radiation for positive purposes within medicine and other industries.
