Detailed profiles of schools for Community Psychology from the EdRef college search portal.
Community Psychology programs prepare students to understand various social issues through theory, research, and action. Action often means they participate in intervention and prevention programs that seek to change or otherwise influence public policy relating to social issues. Students learn how to study people in the context of their social environments like schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. They also study larger social forces, like economic policies and cultural values. They may study housing policies, service systems, early childhood interventions, or mental illnesses.
Students work alongside faculty in a wide variety of research areas. They may assist faculty with journal publications, conference presentations, policy briefs, and evaluation activities. They often work with community-based organizations and collaborate with psychologists from various disciplines and areas of the field. After completing the program, students have a better understanding of how to approach problems with an integrated point of view.
