Psychologists help people to understand and modify their behavior for a wide range of reasons. For example, they may work with athletes who want to overcome psychological barriers to success; people with substance abuse problems who want to end their addictive behavior; or managers who want to develop a more productive workforce. Psychologists may work with patients in one-to-one situations or in groups. Some psychologists also specialize in working with organizations such as businesses or government to improve understanding group behavior and facilitate positive changes in that behavior.
